Specifically, for couples Kelly uses a gentle assessment approach taking literature from Gottman's theory and Sue Johnson's where she:

1. Assess the Relationship: Kelly will first assess the couple's relationship dynamics, communication patterns, and individual concerns. This may involve asking questions about the history of the relationship, current issues, and personal goals.

2. Facilitate Communication: One of Kelly's main role is to help partners communicate more effectively. She teaches skills like active listening, expressing feelings without blame, and understanding each other's perspectives.

3. Resolve Conflicts: Kelly helps partners identify and address ongoing conflicts. This might look like guiding couples in finding mutually satisfying solutions, managing disagreements, and developing strategies to avoid or de-escalate arguments.

4. Work Through Emotional Issues: Kelly helps couples address deeper emotional issues that may be affecting the relationship, such as trust issues, infidelity, or emotional distance. She creates a safe space for both partners to express vulnerable feelings and work through past trauma or unresolved issues.

5. Improve Intimacy and Connection: Kelly works with couples to strengthen emotional and physical intimacy. She helps the couple explore ways to reconnect, improve affection, and rebuild trust and closeness in the relationship.

6. Provide Support During Major Life Transitions: Couples often face significant changes like marriage, parenthood, career shifts, or the loss of a loved one. Kelly helps couples navigate these transitions by offering support and strategies for coping together as a team.

7. Offer Coping Strategies for Stress and External Pressures: Couples may also seek counseling to manage external stressors such as financial strain, family dynamics, or workplace pressures. Kelly can help couples develop healthier coping mechanisms together.

As a family counsellor Kelly works with families to address and resolve various issues that affect family dynamics, relationships, and functioning. She aims to improve communication, strengthen bonds, and support each member of the family in navigating challenges.
Kelly does this by:

1. Assessing Family Dynamics: Kelly assesses how family members interact, communicate, and relate to one another. She helps the family identify any patterns of behavior, conflict, or tension that may be affecting the family unit as a whole.

2. Facilitate Communication: One of the primary roles of a family counselor is to help family members improve their communication. Kelly helps teach effective communication skills, including active listening, expressing emotions constructively, and resolving misunderstandings without escalating conflict.

3. Resolve Conflicts: Kelly works to address conflicts between family members, whether between parents and children, siblings, or other extended family members. She helps family members identify the root causes of conflicts and guide them in finding mutually acceptable solutions.

4. Support During Life Transitions: Families often face significant transitions, such as divorce, remarriage, death, illness, or the arrival of a new baby. Kelly helps the family navigate these changes by offering support, helping members cope with new roles, and ensuring that family members continue to feel connected and understood.

5. Provide Parenting Support: As a Family counselor, Kelly can assist parents with managing challenges related to raising children, such as discipline issues, behavioral problems, or communication difficulties with their kids. She helps provide strategies for improving parenting skills and creating a more harmonious home environment.

6. Address Mental Health Concerns: When a family member is struggling with mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, addiction), a family counselor helps the family understand the condition and how it affects the family dynamic. Kelly can help guide the family in supporting the individual and coping with any challenges related to the illness.

7. Improve Relationships and Bonds: Kelly works with the family to strengthen relationships, enhance emotional connections, and foster a sense of trust, love, and support. This may involve exercises to increase bonding and reduce emotional distance.

8. Teach Problem-Solving and Coping Skills: Kelly loves helping families add to their tool box of coping skills and helps equips families with tools to handle problems effectively. She helps teach conflict resolution strategies, stress management techniques, and ways to handle difficult emotions within the family.

9. Mediation and Negotiation: In cases where there are ongoing disputes within the family, Kelly can act as a mediator to help resolve issues through negotiation, ensuring that all voices are heard and that fair solutions are reached.
